SMOS-MODE Training School 2013 Programme

2013 Microwave Ocean Remote Sensing Training School

30th September -- 4th October 2013

SMOS Barcelona Expert Centre, Barcelona, Spain

Topics and Schedule

The first Microwave Ocean Remote Sensing Training School organized by the SMOS-MODE EU COST Action will take place from 30th September to 4th October 2013, at the SMOS Barcelona Expert Centre, Barcelona, Spain. Through a combination of lectures and practical sessions the school will cover many key aspects of large-scale ocean monitoring, with a particular focus on SMOS data processing and applications.

Many aspects of the current systems for remote sensing of oceans by passive and active microwave sensors will be covered during the Training School. Topics will include Sea Surface Currents; Sea Surface Height (SSH); Sea Ice; Ocean Winds; Sea Surface Temperature (SST); and of course Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) and related variables. Issues concerning both SMOS and Aquarius missions (ESA’s and NASA’s first attempts to measure SSS from space) will be considered including topical lectures on the different SSS processing levels.

The target audience for the Training School includes Masters/PhD students, early career researchers, and professionals in ocean sciences and remote sensing. The number of participants is limited to 25 and therefore applicants will be selected on a competitive basis. Grants to cover part of the costs for travelling and accommodation will also be available.

Applications, including a brief statement of interest and a CV, must be sent via email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by 28th June, 2013. If financial support is required, an estimate of travel costs must also be included with the application. Applicants will be notified about acceptance by July 31, 2013.
