Calypso Drifter Interface

Six drifters and an ARGO float have been deployed in the Malta Channel on 14th December 2012 at stations along a transect between Gozo and the southern Sicilian coast. The drifters and float follow the surface currents and their positions are tracked by satellite in real time. The interface below gives the tracks of the drifters with an update every hour. These drifters provide in situ sea surface current observations and will be used to validate by direct comparison of the same measurements made by the HF radars recently set up at Ta' Sopu (Gozo) and Ta' Barkat (Malta). Two other deployments each with a set of 6 drifters are planned in early 2013.

This activity is conducted as a joint effort between CALYPSO and the Argo-Italy programme (http://argoitaly.inogs.it).
